The Kinetics emerged from a series of informal Saturday morning jam sessions involving many of the musicians in our circle of acquaintance.

 

The core group eventually became the Kinetics, but at various times we were joined by Adrian on Violin, German vocalist Kirsten Flieschammer, Bass player Nick, and others.

We decided to make some demos and after scouring the small ads of the melody maker found the Ark Studios in Kingston, based in a small eight track basement. The owner Howard Condor had been a drummer during the sixties beat boom, and quickly took to us and invited us to use the space for free at times when it wasn’t otherwise booked in return for “first look” at our material.

 

He particularly liked a sort of novelty song we had written, Keeping Up With The Jones’s, and offered to record it with a view to releasing it on his own label.

Subsequently we met John Sebastian who offered to manage us and found a way into the affections of the Charisma record label, who picked up the song for single release. It was rerecorded at Mickey Most’s RAK studio in St. Johns Wood, and released to widespread indifference. Shortly after the band split up
